The Official Start of Spring Shenanigans in Chicago

While the meteorological calendar might say that spring starts on March 1st, the real kickoff to the season’s shenanigans in Chicago is the iconic dyeing of the Chicago River on March 15th. This event marks the beginning of a city-wide celebration that turns everyone into honorary Irish citizens for a few festive days.

Chicago River Dyeing

One of the most iconic events is the dyeing of the Chicago River. This tradition dates back to 1962 and involves turning the river a brilliant shade of emerald green. The dyeing process starts at 10 a.m. on March 15th, and the best views are along the riverfront between State and Columbus.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Another major highlight is the 70th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17th, which steps off at noon on Columbus Drive between Balbo and Monroe Drives. It features colorful floats, Irish step dancers, marching bands, and the renowned Shannon Rovers Irish Pipe Band.

Neighborhood Parades

In addition to the downtown parade, neighborhood parades include the South Side Irish Parade and the Northwest Side Irish Parade. The South Side Irish Parade, held on March 16th, is one of the largest community-based St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the U.S., featuring dozens of floats, Irish music, and dance.
