The Chicago Air and Water Show presented by the City of Chicago is the largest free of charge show of its kind in the United States. It has been held every year since 1959 and is Chicago’s second most popular public festival. Every year it attracts about 2 million spectators. The show is presented by the City of Chicago and can be observed at the lakefront starting from Fullerton to Oak Street. The North Avenue Beach is the most popular spot, where grandstand seats for the water show are located.

The air show features skilled pilots, parachute jumps, and jets flying in formation. There is also water-skiing and boat-jumping performances. The participants of the show include not only military pilots, but civilians as well, like Red Bull teams. Among the major highlights are the U.S. Army Golden Knights performance, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

The Chicago Air and Water Show was first held as a low-budget event in the 50s. It consisted of the Coast Guard Air Sea Rescue demonstration, water skiers, and water ballet. The event became really popular when the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and Golden Knights Parachute Team started to participate in the show.
